July 2016 Griz Lacrosse Alumni and Friends Association Newsletter - Written by Hank Suzlbacher '11 GLAFA Communications Director

Welcome to the Griz Lax Alumni and Friends Association!

Hello and welcome to the Griz Lax Alumni and Friends Association! Whether or not you know it (or like it!), you are a part of this group. Through the work of alumni volunteers, this association has been created to extend the Griz Lax community beyond the four (or more) years that players have with the team. The mission of the Griz Lax Alumni and Friends Association is to keep alumni and friends of Griz Lax informed and connected to the program in order to continue membership in the Griz Lax community even after they have moved on from the program. This will be a way to keep alumni and friends of the program in touch with what’s happening on the field, off-field events, alumni events, upcoming games that may be nearby where alums now live, alumni tourneys and games, and any other newsworthy happenings related to the program without having to scour the internet.

This is also place that can serve as a network of alumni new and old. Have a job opening? Moving to a new city? Whatever it is, use this network as a way to connect or reconnect with the awesomeness of Griz Lax. The association will send out an email ONCE a month with news and information about the program. We promise not to flood your inbox, the point of this is to keep you connected in an easy and enjoyable way.

This whole newsletter began when Coach Tucker Sargent and I spoke about how we could reconnect people from the community that we were such huge part of our college experience. My name is Henry Sulzbacher ‘11 (Hank in the Griz Lax world) and I am the Communication Director for the Griz Lax Alumni and Friends Association. I currently teach and coach lacrosse in the Denver area and I am really excited to get involved with Griz Lax in a more official capacity. You can email me at alumni@grizlax.com with anything concerning this newsletter or if you are looking to get more involved. I will try to keep things to the point in the future but as this is our first letter, there is a lot of stuff happening. Feedback is always welcome! Enjoy and as always, GO GRIZ!

Alumni Spotlight: Will Freihofer '09

Will came to Montana to pursue two major passions: Outdoor adventure and Lacrosse. Will played for the Griz from 2005-2009 and coached for two years after that. Will was twice named All-Conference and was a major contributor to the 2007 Div. B National Championship team. When Will wasn't playing lacrosse he was probably whitewater kayaking, rafting, building something obscure, or skiing. Will recently took a job with Seacat Creative in Bozeman, MT. Seacat specialized in outdoor product branding, and Will is responsible for filming, photographing and producing other marketing materials for companies like Gerber, Sitka, Gore-Tex, and Yeti Coolers. Will and his family have always been great supporters of Griz Lax, and its safe to say that Griz Lax is proud to call Will one of its own.

2016-17 Captains Announced

(From L to R: Larson, Tomlinson, and Kramer)

Eric “Jerry Jr.” Johnson (Senior/Attackman) - Nicknamed for former Griz Lax sharpshooter Jeremy Brown, Eric has been an offensive threat since arriving on campus from Salt Lake City, Utah. Eric has 173 points in 43 games with the Griz and will continue to lead the offense with his production as well as his calm demeanor on the field.

Brent Tomlinson (Grad. Student/Midfielder) - Brent is currently enrolled in the University of Montana School of Law. After player two years of NCAA Div. I lacrosse at Brown University, Brent was excited to take advantage of his remaining eligibility and has had an immediate impact on the time and has become an important leader on the team. Brent’s power and size make him a force on the offensive end of the field and his IQ enhances the play of those around him. Brent always brings full effort and intensity to practices and games largely because he is “just happy to be away from [his] books for a few hours.”

Alex Kramer (Senior/Defense) - Alex is the team’s “mental rock” according to Coach Sargent who expects him to continue that leadership role as he looks to anchor the defense once again. After several key players went down due to injury last season, Alex stepped up and took over as strong leader and strong player for the Griz. His quick hands and mature, steady leadership will be imperative to the success of the defense.

Player Spotlight: Matt Duffy (Sr./Mid/Portland, OR)

Matt Duffy returns to the Griz after taking the 2015-16 season off for personal reasons. Coach Sargent and the rest of the staff are excited to have him back on the team for his physical and emotional presence. Coming to the Griz from Jesuit High School in Portland, Oregon, Matt is a walking mismatch at 6’6 and an important player whose size is only matched by his skills. Matt is expected to push transition and use his length on both ends of the field. Off the field, Matt his focused on his business degree where he is primarily focused on sales. Matt’s contagiously positive attitude is huge for the team’s chemistry and is also a main reason why he is known as the Griz who could, according to Coach Sargent, most likely “sell a ketchup popsicle to a woman in a white dress.” Matt is Currently interning at Enterprise Rent-A-Car in their sales training program. The Griz players and staff are extremely excited to have Matt back and are all looking forward to his contributions to a successful 2016-17 season.

Mark Your Calendars!!!

Alumni! Don't miss out on an excuse to play with your former teammates this October at the Annual Montana Shootout. Last year we had a good showing and we certainly had a lot of fun. The Griz Alumni team, affectionately known as HAF (Heavy and Fat?), is your best opportunity to reconnect with old friends, drink some beers, meet the current Griz players, and, oh ya, play some lacrosse. Don’t worry if you have lost your gear or haven’t played in a while, we can always wrangle up gear and we are more concerned about your contribution to the 5th quarter (the bar) than we are you reliving your glory days (like I, Henry, will be doing). Last year’s roster included me, Will Freihofer ‘09, Brogan Ballard ‘10, Hank Veitan ‘12, Zac Barta ‘13, Tucker Sargent ‘09, Henry Bishop ‘12, Sam Cameron ‘10 (YES, EVEN SAM CAME!) and many many more. We hope to see you this October at the Annual shootout and you can email me at alumni@grizlax.com or info@grizlax.com. It is an excellent event and I encourage you and the other Alumni you are still in contact with to attend!
